Purpose of Job

The Extension Outreach Educator will assist with conducting outreach and training workshops that will help landowners understand how various United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) programs can assist them in managing their farming operations.

Scope of Responsibilities

The Extension Outreach Educator will be responsible for the coordinating of all workshop/training activities for veterans, new and beginning farmers, limited resource farmers, socially disadvantaged farmers and other agriculturalists interested in gaining awareness and knowledge of available programs and services offered through the USDA.

Essential Job Functions

Develop farm management educational programs, events, and materials to improve farm profitability and sustainability.
Conduct educational training on Farm Financial Management and Farm Risk Management.
Provide technical assistance on farm loan and other government agencies requirements and application processes.
Assist with conducting statewide USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Vendors Borrowers Trainings.
Conduct training and activities for field staff and other stakeholders.
Identify and collaborate with relevant local federal and state agencies, institutions community based organizations (CBO) to deliver educational programs, events and activities.
Implement educational programs regarding farm management, including financial management, herd health, management and business analysis, risk management, short courses, tours, demonstrations, and other appropriate teaching and delivery methods.

The Extension Outreach Educator will assist to establish the demonstration farms, provide workshops and hands-on training to be used to educate producers on soil and soil moisture relationships, how to manage cover crops and irrigation water for crop production. The Extension Outreach Educator will also assist to educate participants on Good Agricultural Practices/Good Handling Practices (GAP/GHP) and proper cooling techniques.


Minimum of three years of farm related experience
One to three years of Management experience
Minimum of three years experience providing Outreach Education in rural communities
Possess a valid driver s license
Capability to participate in educational training, demonstrations, programs, events, and activities throughout Mississippi and other states as required by the Outreach Project
A Bachelor s Degree in Agriculture or related field, Master preferred

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

The applicant must be dependable; must have excellent interpersonal, customer relations, communication, and organizational skills; effective time management skills and must be able to complete projects by deadline. Applicant must also have knowledge of the principles and methods of program planning, design and development, strong management skills including experience in team building and the ability to identify and build on the strengths of the organization.
