Job Summary
The Director, Practice Group Business Development & Management directs a team of three to four business development and practice management professionals (PG Managers and PG Coordinators) in the daily operations of assigned practice groups and departments. Together with his/her team, the Director ensures that the practice groups' day-to-day operations are running effectively and efficiently. The Director is responsible for leading a culture of business development within the practice groups by focusing primarily on their strategic growth and planning, competitive differentiation and on increasing revenue, reputation/brand, and profitability. Additionally, the Director serves as an integral part of the department's leadership team.
This position will work closely with other members of the PG BD&M, Marketing & Communications, and Client Development teams to ensure their initiatives support firm priorities and help drive overall firm strategy.
Primary Areas of Responsibility
General
* Serves as trusted advisor and sounding board to Practice Group leaders.
* Works with Practice Group leaders to develop the group's strategy and performance objectives, and lead, oversee, drive and ensure the timely execution of initiatives to support such strategy/objectives.
* Relentlessly pursues operational effectiveness, profit maximization and innovation in service delivery.
* Ensures exemplary client service at all levels of the assigned practice groups, achieved through collaboration, shared resources, effective knowledge exchange.
* Establishes best practices in business development and practice management and implements proactive, firm-wide solutions to streamline and improve related processes.
* Works with firm management and other professional departments to identify, develop and drive firm initiatives. Integrates firm-wide goals into practice group initiatives.
* Stays abreast of and keeps the practice group apprised of new developments, trends, tools and solutions in the legal industry.
* Oversees the recruitment, performance management, compensation, employee relations, professional development, training and motivating of team members.
* Collaborates with the other directors in the department, responsible for the creation and implementation of a comprehensive training program for professional staff members in Practice Group Business Development & Management Department.
* Works with other directors and managers to plan for potential business disruption, ensures critical data is backed up properly and creates business continuity solutions by testing and implementing various recovery plans enabling the firm to resume normal operations as soon as possible following a disaster.
* Protects firm and client information by ensuring compliance with the firm's information security policies, safeguarding firm assets from unauthorized access, disclosure, modification, destruction or interference and reporting security events or potential events or other security risks to management.
Business Development
* Builds a culture of business development within assigned practice groups. Develops and oversees all business development-related initiatives for assigned practice groups.
* Leads efforts related to content development of all practice group-specific marketing collateral.
* Identifies innovative ways to package and sell current capabilities.
* Oversees practice group-specific proposals, pitches and responses to RFPs. Works with Marketing Managers, PG Managers, and attorney stakeholders to contribute to the preparation of responses to firm-wide RFPs.
* Creates and oversees a system for the collection and management of pitches, proposals, opportunities, matters and experience for assigned practice groups. Leads efforts to implement best practices on collecting, reporting and following up on practice-group specific pitches.
* Works with Practice Group leaders, attorneys and PG Managers to develop and drive practice group business development plans and individual business plans. Leverages market research, competitive intelligence, internal data to formulate such plans. Focuses on generation of business leads, expansion of existing client matters, and identification and pursuit of cross-selling opportunities.
* Works with PG attorneys, PG Manager and Events Manager to conceptualize and conduct industry and client events and direct business development-focused follow up.
* Seeks opportunities to increase brand awareness and maximize competitive differentiation for assigned practice groups or individual partners.
* In collaboration with Research Services, conducts and delivers meaningful research on existing and prospective clients, competitor activity, and industry or market trends to inform and support business development opportunities, strategies, and decisions.
Strategic Recruiting, Lateral Integration, Attorney Development and Staffing - in collaboration with the firm's Attorney Recruiting Group and Lawyer Development Committee.
* Assists in identification of potential lateral hires, at both partner and non-partner levels.
* Oversees hiring, integrating, retaining and developing attorneys (both partner and non-partner) for the assigned practice groups.
* Provides input on the attorney evaluation and promotion process and succession planning for the assigned practice groups.
* Ensures that new lateral partner hires are fully integrated and effectively promoted firm-wide and that their expertise and association with the firm is strategically communicated to current and potential clients.
Financial Analysis, Reporting, Management and Budgeting
* Conducts high-level \"executive\" review of assigned practice groups' budget for the year, ensuring that proposed spending is aligned to the strategic plans.
* Reviews and analyzes financial reports provided by the Finance Department to assess profitability, identify trends and make recommendations to improve group performance and matter profitability.

Education
The position requires a Bachelor's Degree. JD, MBA or other related advanced degree preferred.
Experience
The position requires a minimum of fifteen (15) years of increasingly responsible, directly related experience that included direct personnel supervision and management on a regular basis in demanding client service-oriented industries. JD, MBA or other related advanced degree may substitute for required experience.
Direct experience in a law firm environment in a business development or practice management capacity required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Substantive knowledge of legal and business environments and assigned legal practice areas.
* Knowledge of accounting and budgeting principles and ability to analyze financial data, draw accurate conclusions and make appropriate recommendations for future courses of action.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate persuasively, both orally and in writing, on a prepared and extemporaneous basis with all levels of attorneys and staff. Ability to \"command the room\" in meetings and manage partner relationships.
* Demonstrated ability to make presentations to small and/or large groups in an effective manner and to produce quality written communications such as memos, spreadsheets, slides, and other standard work documents.
* Demonstrated ability to apply innovation to the area and firm challenges to identify problems, and propose and implement solutions.
* Ability to motivate others and build effective, cooperative work teams, fostering an environment in which teamwork and interdependent thinking are encouraged and reinforced.
