Role summary:

The Calkins Director of Production manages a team of Production Editors, a Senior Designer, and a Production Assistant.

This person will provide leadership and oversight of the Calkins Production Team that manages a series of complex projects with multiple components/multiple platforms on challenging schedules in a dedicated team environment, from manuscript through final file release, ensuring that projects meet author/editorial/marketing vision in addition to quality, budget, and schedule expectations.

The Calkins Director of Production helps the team create/manage production schedules; production workflows with authors, editors, freelancers, marketing, and manufacturing; and including the review, routing, and preparation of final file release to manufacturing.

Archives final files as per protocol. Hires and oversees freelancers.

Primary Responsibilities:

Provides leadership for the Calkins Production/Design team to help meet project, author, and market needs/accuracy/quality standards.

Oversees the performance and operation of the Calkins Production/Design team, including resource management and allocation.

Mentors Production Editors and Production Assistant in their roles.

Supervises the creation and management of production schedules to ensure that all publication dates are met; provides feedback and oversees the prepress and production workflow through to publication.

Communicates critical project information to ensure all projects adhere to goals/schedules/budgets and informs stakeholders of interdependencies.

Attends and provides feedback on status meetings for assigned team members.

Advises Production Editors on workflows and tools as needed. Helps research and develop time-saving and cost-effective initiatives and recommends workflow alternatives as appropriate.

Helps develop professional and effective working relationships with authors and project editors.

Supervises the preparation of bid requests for competitive composition and prepress projects (designers, copyeditors, proofreaders, outside production management services, illustrators, photographers, translators); assignments and helps to maintain and grow the pool of outside vendors and resources.

Works with the VP Production/Design in forecasting budgets and refining project forecasts based on budget goals; on a consistent basis to help improve the accuracy of all budgets.

Collaborates/coordinates with team technology developers as needed.

Supervises the archiving of project assets and works to improve overall protocol to reduce file management risks.

Manages projects of their own and assists team as necessary.

Requirements:

Bachelor s degree.

Thorough knowledge of publication process, preferably in an educational environment.

Stellar language, people, and project management skills. Ability to multitask; prioritize workload; and identify potential problems, creative alternatives and options; and effectively implement solutions.

Must be detail oriented, but able to embrace big-picture vision and work independently while maintaining strong intra- and interdepartmental communication.

Occasional travel to outside vendors and assistance at conferences.

Experience:

10+ years publishing experience, with at least 5 years in a management position.

Technology/Software Skills:

Mac fluency a must; cross-platform experience preferred.

Experience with common desktop publishing (InDesign) and graphic (Photoshop, Illustrator) applications, as well as Excel and Microsoft Word.

Must be experienced across a spectrum of file delivery formats and procedures (. tiff,. jpg,. pdf, FTP, markup language, etc.).

Working knowledge of automation/scripting a plus.

Physical Requirements:

Might be in a stationary position for a considerable time (sitting and/or standing).

The person in this position needs to move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.

Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer.

Must be able to collaborate with colleagues via face to face, conference calls, and online meetings.
